New Delhi, Aug. 22: In a major relief to the subscribers who had to wait for refund from telecom companies, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) today directed the telecom companies to furnish refunds within 60 days.
Trai has received complaints from subscribers stating that service providers are taking inordinately long to refund security deposits after disconnection of the telephone.
The regulator examined the issue and discussions were also held with telecom operators. It also considered the prevalent Department of Telecommunication (DoT) norms regarding the time frame for refund of security deposit.
”The Authority, after due consideration of all the relevant facts has decided a time frame of 60 (Sixty) days within which service providers shall effect refund of the security deposit after adjustment of dues, if any, from the subscribers,” said an official release.
”The Authority has also decided that the service providers shall pay an interest at a rate of 10 per cent per annum for the delayed period beyond 60 days,” the release added.
Sources in Trai said companies like BSNL and MTNL were found to be the major defaulters in cases of refund to its subscribers.
