SUCI issues 72-hour bandh threat

Aug. 21: The bandh by the SUCI to protest enhanced taxes, among other things, evoked partial response in Calcutta and elsewhere in the state.

The day-long shutdown was not opposed by the Congress and the Trinamul Congress.

Claiming that the bandh was a success, SUCI state secretary Provas Ghosh said the party was planning a 72-hour shutdown after the pujas. Before that, Ghosh said, the SUCI will gherao Writers’ Buildings.

Today, train services were normal except for a few obstructions of tracks by bandh supporters. There was no impact on flight schedules.

In Calcutta, shops in the business district were closed. Few buses, mini buses and taxis were on the road. Those that plied had few passengers.

Transport minister Subhas Chakraborty said attendance was thin at Writers’ Buildings. It was “another holiday” for most.
