Easy wins for Humpy, Zhao

Kozhikode: Top seed Koneru Humpy and second seed Zhao Xue of China had an easy outing in the opening round of the 10th Asian womenís chess championship here on Sunday.

Anupama Gokhale lost to third seed Wang Pin.

On the top board, Humpy applied the Bangko Gambit opening against Zhang Jilin of China to gain control by the 25th move and surged ahead in the 33rd with a bishop pair to force her opponent to resign in the 48th.

Playing a Sicilian-Nadjroff opening, Swati Ghate allowed Xue to seize the initiative in the 18th move. Going in for an attacking game, Swati made a positional error in the 22nd move and resigned after 33 moves.

Bhagyashree Thipsay engaged the French defence against the Advanced Variation of No. 4 Vietnamís Hoang Thanh Trang and lost in 45 moves.

Making a reti opening, fifth seed S. Vijayalakshmi outplayed compatriot Eesha Karavade, who adopted grunfield defence.
