London, Aug 16 (Reuters): Manchester United and Arsenal opened their title assaults on winning notes Saturday with United beating Bolton Wanderers 4-0 at Old Trafford and Arsenal getting past Everton 2-1 at Highbury.
For United, Ryan Giggs scored two while Paul Scholes and Ruud van Nistelrooy completed the tally.
Arsenalís day was marred by the first-half dismissal of England defender Sol Campbell for tripping Evertonís Thomas Gravesen after 26 minutes. Everton had Chinese international Li Tie sent off in the 87th.
Thierry Henry and Robert Pires scored for the Gunners while Tomasz Radzinski netted the reducer.
Promoted Portsmouth also enjoyed their first match in the top flight for 15 years with a 2-1 home win over Aston Villa, who had skipper Gareth Barry sent off three minutes from time.
