Fillip for Durgapur Steel

Calcutta, Aug. 14: Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) has approved an investment proposal for Durgapur Steel Plant in order to produce steel through a 100-per-cent continuous casting route. The proposal includes setting up of a bloom-caster in the first phase and a couple of finishing mills at a later stage.

Sources in the company said the investment for the bloom-caster will be around Rs 125-150 crore.

“The bloom-caster will help us reduce the operating cost while enhancing the quantity, quality and yield,” said S. K. Bhattacharyya, managing director of Durgapur Steel.

Sources said the new caster will be commissioned in 18-24 months. “This caster will have a capacity to produce a little less than one million tonnes of blooms per annum,” they said, adding the new process will bring about substantial savings in ingot mould and bottom plates besides enhancing quality.
