Surat, Aug. 11 (PTI): Sunanda Shetty, the mother of actress Shilpa Shetty and the prime accused in an alleged extortion case, today told police that she had called Prafful Saris owner Pankaj Agarwal to settle the financial dispute between them but denied hiring the underworld to recover the money that he allegedly owed the actress.
“Sunanda admitted that she had called Pankaj Agarwal to discuss the payment of Rs 2 crore that he reportedly owed Shilpa for an ad assignment,” inspector D.D. Damor said after interrogating the actress’ mother in Umra police station late this evening.
“We even asked her (Sunanda Shetty) whether she knew Malaysia-based gangster Fazlur Rehman and if at all she had contacted him. But Sunanda replied in the negative,” asserted the police official.
Umra police claim to possess the recording of a conversation between Shilpa’s parents, Agarwal, Fazlur and his henchman in Surat, Dinesh Shetty.
Sunanda’s bail plea will come up for hearing on Wednesday. The actress’ mother has been allowed to return to Mumbai until then.
