A trader was hacked to death at Majherpara, in the Baruipur police station area of South 24-Parganas, on Saturday morning.
Hannan Mollah, 40, was “brutally” killed while he was asleep on the terrace of his residence, police said. The culprits have not been identified. A police picket was posted in the area as tension mounted.
Police said Mollah would often sleep on the terrace and it was likely the killers had known about this. Mollah’s wife rushed to the terrace on hearing a cry and found her husband, alone, with multiple injuries. Police suspect the assailants had climbed a tree adjacent to the house to reach the terrace. The culprits, police suspect, left through the main door of the building after the murder. The body has been sent for a post-mortem.
