Attack on CPM office kills leader

Midnapore, Aug. 9: The CPM zonal committee leader of Khejuri in East Midnapore district was shot dead and six persons were seriously injured tonight when alleged Trinamul Congress supporters attacked a party office.

Asrukana Das, 36, a part-time lecturer of Khejuri College, was holding a meeting with party colleagues at Baratala party office when the attackers men suddenly arrived in a private car and several two-wheelers.

The Trinamul supporters, who were returning from party chief Mamata Banerjee’s meeting at Haldia, opened fire and hurled bombs, alleged CPM district secretariat member Nirmal Jana.

Among the injured was CPM zonal committee leader and karmadhaksha of Khejuri block I Rabiul Islam, who was present at the meeting.

The CPM district leadership has demanded the immediate arrest of the culprits and will protest against the attack tomorrow.

The local Trinamul leadership denied the charges. Party district committee member Sisir Adhikary said it was a clash between two CPM faction.

He added that it was impossible to attack CPM members in an area where Trinamul did not have much presence.
