Eveready A clinch title

Calcutta: Eveready Industries A won The Telegraph Merchants’ Cup golf championship, presented by Shaw Wallace, at Tollygunge Club on Friday.

The champions left the rest of the field far behind as Aditya Khaitan returned a scintillating 69. They tallied 306, 27 strokes ahead of their own B team which narrowly edged out McLeod & Co. — finishing at 338.

For Eveready B, Ajay Pal Singh’s 81 made the difference as Sharad Bajoria of McLeod & Co. got a 95. Eveready B won the Division I title, while McLeod & Co. came runners-up.

In Division II, B.M. Birla Heart Research Centre made a late charge with Suyash Borar returning an 84 and annexed the title with a total of 356, seven strokes ahead of George Williamson C, who finished at 363.

New entrants S.E. Railways won the Division III title with a team total of 371, well ahead of ITC Limited D, who finished second.

Sumo Enterprises clinched the Challenge Cup with a team total of +26. Salasar Services finished at +24. Asit Luthra, playing for GISI, won the low gross in this category and his 71 was only one stroke better than Sanjeev Mehra.

Lt Gen. J. S. Varma, GOC-in-C, Eastern Command, was the chief guest at the presentation ceremony at the Hyatt Regency.
