‘Dollar’ diplomat

Dhaka, Aug. 8 (PTI): An Iraqi diplomat stationed in New Delhi was detained here today while attempting to fly to the Indian capital carrying huge amount of “unauthorised” US dollars, airport sources said.

Customs officials at Zia International Airport found $172,000 in the briefcase of Omar M. Shabi Ahmed, third secretary of Iraqi embassy in New Delhi, private television NTV reported tonight. Ahmed arrived here yesterday with a seven-day visa.

The diplomat is reported to have told customs officials that it is a common practice to take money from one diplomatic mission to another. Customs officials, however, said the diplomat had no valid document to carry such a huge amount of foreign currency.

Ahmed, who was to fly by a Bangladesh Biman flight, was later handed over to Iraqi charge’s de affairs here, the NTV report said.
