Doctors back at work

Burdwan, July 22: The doctor who was almost lynched here yesterday after a patient delivered a stillborn child was said to be recovering at the SSKM Hospital in Calcutta.

Suprakash Bhattacharya’s colleagues here returned to work after five persons were arrested for the assault and the court remanded them in jail custody. Clinics and pathological laboratories here were shut this morning but opened in the evening. The Indian Medical Association said it was happy with the police’s assurance of security to doctors and the arrests.

The husband of the woman who delivered the dead child, Biswajit Sen, was arrested yesterday for being part of the mob that ransacked Bhattacharya’s chamber, dragged him out and battered him. Sen’s brother Abhijit today said unknown persons assaulted Bhattacharya and the family had no hand in provoking the mob.
