The art of Kathakali

The Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre (EZCC) is hosting a 10-day workshop on the traditional form of Kathakali. The workshop assumes importance as it is being conducted by Kalamandalam Rajasekharan (picture above), a Kathakali exponent of repute who has been performing for more than 35 years and has been teaching for the past 23 years. At present, he heads the department of Kathakali Vesham and is the vice-principal, Kerala Kalamandalam, the country’s largest performing arts training academy in Cheruthuruthy, Thrissur district, which imparts training in the classical performing arts to over 300 students at any given time. Rajasekharan is famous for portraying important female roles in the Kathakali style. He has presented almost all classical female characters. The workshop offers a unique opportunity to learn the intricacies of this ancient art from one of its most distinguished performers. After the workshop, Rajasekharan will perform at Bharatiyam, IB 201, Salt Lake, on July 31.
