In-law held for murder of housewife

Mograhat (South 24-Parganas) July 20: A pregnant housewife was allegedly murdered by her brother-in-law last night.

Shikha Pramanik, 23, had her throat slit at her house in Dhamua, about 60 km from Calcutta.

Police have arrested her brother-in-law Ashok Pramanik and are searching for husband Nirmal. The parents-in-law have been detained for interrogation.

A neighbour said Shikha and Nirmal, who got married two years ago, had had a number of minor fights of late.

Police said last night Shikha retired to her room after serving dinner and was waiting for Nirmal to return when Ashok burst in and hacked her with a sharp weapon. On hearing her screams, neighbours rushed in. The police was informed.

Shikha had died of a gaping wound to the throat.

Ashok has apparently confessed to the crime. But subdivisional officer of Diamond Harbour Mehmood Akhtar said he had not told why he killed Shikha.
