Calcutta: After cricket, it’s hockey’s turn now. On Wednesday, Indian hockey got a new sponsor with Sahara India Pariwar taking the game under its fold as well.
According to information received here from New Delhi, the Sahara India Group signed an eight-year deal with the Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) to sponsor both the senior as well as junior national teams.
Announcing this, IHF president, K.P.S. Gill said: “We are confident that this association with Sahara India Pariwar will be the much-needed catalyst to transform the future of Indian hockey”.
The announcement comes close on the heels of India’s victory at a four-nation tournament in Hamburg — the second title within a month following triumph in a three-nation event in Australia.
The national team had been without a sponsor following the withdrawal of Castrol two months ago.
