Father poisons children

Raidighi (South 24-Parganas) July 7: A 40-year-old daily wage earner poisoned his three children before attempting suicide early this morning.

Raut Ali Mollah alias Bhola, a resident of Sharifultala, about 85 km from Calcutta, killed his two daughters, Raufan Khatun, 11, and Sariful Khatun, 7, and his 5-year-old son, Saharan Molla, before consuming poison.

Around 8 am, Bhola, an early riser, was missed by Asgar Ali, a neighbour. Ali went to Bhola’s house and found the main door locked from inside. He peeped through a window and saw the three children lying on the floor and Bhola gasping for breath.

Suspecting foul play, Ali informed Kalipada Haldar, a local CPM zilla parishad member.

“On receiving a call from Haldar, we rushed to the spot and broke open the main door of Bhola’s house. Finding all the four in an unconscious state, we immediately transferred them to the nearby Raidighi Hospital, where the three children were pronounced dead,” said the officer-in-charge of Raidighi police station.

Hospital sources said the father was fighting for his life.

“He is going through convulsions and is unable to speak. It is hard to say at this moment whether he will survive or not,” said a hospital official.

Ali claimed that “Bhola was financially secure”, but added that he was depressed as his wife had left him.

“He had three children to look after and this often frustrated him,” Ali said.
