Security guard crushed to death

Jodunath Dey, a 55-year-old security guard of a private company, was run over by a lorry in Liluah on Sunday afternoon. According to police, Dey opened the factory gate for the lorry to enter and unload goods. But the driver lost control and crushed him against the wall.

Dacoity foiled in New Alipore

Four armed youths were arrested on Sunday morning on Lock Gate Road, in the New Alipore police station area. A police patrol intercepted the youths while they were preparing to commit a dacoity. Five country-made bombs and a revolver were recovered.

Youth shot at

Satyanarayan Sil, 27, was shot by three unidentified men on Sunday afternoon at Lalkuthi, in the Lake Town police station area. Police said Sil, an aide of local crimelord Rajesh, was admitted to hospital.

Murder

Shyamal Das, a 35-year-old promoter, was killed by his business partner, Basu Das, in Naihati on Saturday night. Basu hit Shyamal on the head with a sharp weapon after an altercation broke out between the two. Shyamal died on the spot. Basu is absconding, police said.

Restaurateur dies

Pratip (Mitu) Kumar Dasgupta, the 75-year-old proprietor of Bengali restaurant Kewpie’s, died in Mumbai on Sunday. His last rites will be performed in Calcutta on Monday.

Train stranded

The 209 Up Howrah-Darbhanga Fast Passenger was stranded at Chandernagore for over an hour-and-a-half due to technical snags on Sunday. According to railway sources, a few other trains on the route were delayed as a result.
