Atal eye surgery successful

New Delhi, June 29 (PTI): Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee underwent a minor eye surgery under local anaesthesia this morning at the army’s Research and Referral Hospital here.

The surgery, which was performed by a team of doctors headed by Professor Madan Mohan, was a “success”, a spokesman in the Prime Minister’s Office said.

The spokesman said the Prime Minister had returned to his Race Course Road residence. Vajpayee has been advised rest for the next few days, he added.

When the Prime Minister was returning from hospital this afternoon, two youths — Pushpinder Singh and Ravinder — attempted to intrude into the path of the convoy.

The youths attempted to cross over the security barricade near Teen Murthi when security personnel pounced on them. The two were immediately taken to Tughlaq Road police station and were questioned by a team of police and intelligence officials.

The duo, hailing from Garhwal, said they were unaware of security restrictions and did not intend to breach the Prime Minister’s security.
