Bullets to quell vote clash

Midnapore, June 27: Police fired several rounds in the air to disperse warring Trinamul Congress and CPM supporters at Badhia in East Midnapore today after an Independent panchayat member swung the scales during elections to the posts of a panchayat pradhan and his deputy.

Both CPM and Trinamul won 11 seats each in the recent rural polls and the other gram panchayat seat went to an Independent. Today’s election had generated keen interest in the area and several hundred supporters of both parties converged on the panchayat office prompting a heavy police arrangement.

Trouble started after Trinamul candidates won the top posts. The police soon became the target of stone-pelting mobs. An official said five rounds were fired in the air. No one was injured.

Bangladeshis held: Burdwan police today caught 105 Bangladeshis from Palla Road station where they had disembarked from a lorry en route for jobs in Mumbai.
