Another bidder for Great Eastern

Prasoon Mukherjee, president and CEO of OBS Restaurant (Thailand) Limited, met chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee at Writers’ Buildings on Monday and expressed interest in Great Eastern Hotel. Three bidders for the hotel have been listed with the state government — Badshah Hotels, India, Singapora Limited and Manish Financial Services, Malaysia. Mukherjee also placed a proposal for setting up a gas-based power plant in the state.

HC adjourns Bleach case

The Calcutta High Court on Monday adjourned for four days a decision on whether to recommend quashing assault charges against Peter Bleach, sentenced to life imprisonment for his role in the Purulia armsdrop operation. Bleach stands accused of attacking a fellow prisoner in Presidency jail in November 2002. Terming the charges against him “false and fabricated”, the British national has filed a petition to have the case against him dismissed. Justice D.P. Sengupta ruled that he would adjourn for four days to decide on whether the case should be dismissed.

Nurse suicide bid

A trainee nurse attempted suicide by swallowing sleeping pills on Sunday night in the women’s hostel of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Police said Pratiksha Biswas, 22, a resident of Barasat, consumed 40 sleeping pills. She is under treatment in the hospital. Her condition is stated to be critical.

State CAS views

Chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Monday said the state government had sent its views on the conditional access system (CAS) to the Centre. “The Centre had asked for our views on CAS,” he said at Writers’ Buildings. Bhattacharjee, however, refused to divulge details of the state’s stand on CAS.

Drug peddler held

Nirmal Das, 26, a resident of Bidhannagar, was picked up from Karunamoyee bus terminus in Salt Lake on Monday evening on charges of selling drugs. About 100 gm of hashish was recovered from the arrested man, said Ajay Nand, additional superintendent of police, Salt Lake.

Eviction plan

The urban development department will launch a drive to evict illegal occupants from different government housing estates in Salt Lake, principal secretary of the department K.S. Rajendrakumar said on Monday.

Pirated discs

More than 700 pirated audio and view CDs were seized from a video parlour in Phoolbagan. Police said one person was rounded up during the raid conducted on Monday.
