Liquor rally draws fire

Behrampore, June 23: Police fired in the air to disperse a mob protesting against the authorities for granting licence to a liquor shop at Nabipur village in Raninagar, Murshidabad.

“The owner of the shop had asked for help so that he could run the country liquor outlet. He had recently acquired a licence from the excise department. He was being threatened by residents,” a police officer said.

The officer-in-charge of Raninagar led a force this morning to drive away the protesters. But villagers gheraoed the police and the scene turned tense with the mob shouting anti-police slogans. “The police had to fire a round in the air,” said an officer.

Liquor shop owner Partha Saha said his business was legal.
