Clean sweep by Basaks

The Basaks took home all three individual titles at stake in the 28th all-India inter-YMCA table tennis championships Sunday. Arup won the men’s singles beating Bombay’s Eric Fernandez 11-6, 11-6, 11-7, 9-11, 11-4. Kanchan then lifted the women’s crown thrashing Calcutta teammate Moumita Das 11-7, 10-12, 11-8, 11-6, 11-4. Arup completed a ‘double’ when he and Shauvik Basu Roy overcame Shantanu Majumdar and Saurav Sengupta 3-1 in the doubles final.

A 14-0 scoreline

The CFL fifth division saw a rare 14-0 scoreline Sunday, in favour of Mei-Kong Ex Student. It was Armenian SC who were at the receiving end, at the Rangers ground. Four players scored three goals each — Bapi Roy, Saptarshi Sarkar, Rathin Basak and Jayanta Haldar.

In other matches, Palash Laskar of Beniatola Club and Swapan Biswas of Bengal Sporting Club were marched off. That didn’t deter their teams from winning against Beniapukur Institute and Calcutta United Club, respectively.

IFA felicitation

The IFA Sunday kept its promise of according a high-class felicitation to the national championship-winning Bengal under-16 and under-21 teams. All players and the coach of the under-16 squad were given gold rings. The under-21 members got gold chains with a football-shaped locket. The presentations were made during a get-together over lunch at a five-star hotel.
