Girl run over on flooded road

A 10-year-old girl was run over on a waterlogged road in New Alipore on Saturday evening.

Shukla Das, a resident of Diamond Harbour Road, was swimming in waist-high water on Sahapur Road after the heavy showers, when an unknown vehicle knocked her down. She was taken to MR Bangur Hospital where she was pronounced dead, police said. The driver fled with the vehicle.

Residents blocked Sahapur Road for half-an-hour, protesting the death. Some people pelted stones at passing cars. The agitation aggravated the traffic congestion caused by the downpour throughout the day.

Metro services hit

Metro rail services were hit for more than half-an-hour after a Tollygunge-bound train developed a snag at Shyambazar station on Saturday afternoon. The train reached Shyambazar at 5.07 pm and was pulled out after some time, Metro Railway officials said. Three Up and four Down trains were cancelled as a result. Services were resumed from 5.42 pm.
