Bowring’s

Calcutta, June 19: The board of directors of Bowring’s Fine Art Auctioneers has decided to cease operations till the court case involving the Archaeological Survey of India, the CBI and Bowring’s regarding the requirement of a licence to auction antiquities is resolved.

According to a letter circulated by the company, initially, Bowring’s was given to believe there was no need for a licence. However, ASI informed the company in January of the need for such a licence in response to inquiries made by it since October 2001, and after all its catalogues had been sent to the ASI.

Subsequently, its office in Delhi has been downsized, and those in Calcutta, Mumbai and Bangalore have been closed.
