Bengal storm into semi-finals

Chennai: Former champions Bengal swept into the semi-finals of the 11th national women’s football championship here on Wednesday evening, while Bihar faced ouster after being held goalless by Tamil Nadu.

In the first match, a group D encounter, Bengal scored a confident 6-0 win over Uttar Pradesh, while Bihar, who had lost to Orissa in last year’s semi-finals, failed to convert two chances.

For Bengal, striker Swapna Guria scored thrice (8th, 53rd and 65th), Rinku Ghosh — who scored a hattrick against Assam— netted a brace (15th and 31st) while substitute Sefali Choudhury wrapped it up in the 77th minute.

Bengal have so far scored nine goals without letting in any and have six points from two matches to progress to the next grade.
