George, City AC post wins

George Telegraph and City AC earned good victories in their IFA first division group A league matches Wednesday. While City overcame Sonali Shibir 1-0, George beat Salkia Friends 3-1. The dayís other match, between Kalighat and Kidderpore, ended goalless. Surajit Basu, Jamaiya and Raju Ghosh scored for George and Ranjit Chatterjee reduced the margin for Salkia. Bhadu Pramanik netted Cityís winner.

YMCA meet

Stars like Arup Basak (and wife Kanchan), Souvik Basu Roy and Moumita Dutta will be on show when the 96 participants from 21 teams across the country take part in the 28th all-India inter-YMCA table tennis championships at the Chowringhee centre from Friday to Sunday. In the 15 menís and six womenís teams there will be 62 men and 34 women. Stag International has sponsored two tables for the meet.

Sayantan in lead

Sayantan Dutta emerged sole leader with four points after the fourth round of the Alekhine Chess Club national B selection chess meet at Gorky Sadan. He is followed by Somak Palit and Arghyadip Das (3.5 each).

Sayantan, playing white versus Abhratanu, was fortunate to snatch full point from his young opponent with the game clearly heading for a draw off a rook-and-pawn ending. Abhratanu mishandled the ending and lost.
