Suicides after results

Calcutta, June 17: Frustrated by their poor performance in the Madhyamik examinations, three girls from the districts committed suicide. The results were announced on Sunday.

Officials said Rumpa Lahiri, 16, a resident of Rajgunge in Chandrakona, committed suicide today by consuming poison. Rumpa, a student of Jhankra High School, was upset on learning she was in the second division.

Sixteen-year-old Seema Bhaduri from Murshidabd consumed pesticides yesterday after hearing she had failed. She was admitted to Behrampore State General Hospital, where she died this afternoon.

Nilima Das, 20, a student of Deshbandhu Memorial Girls’ High School in Chinsurah, Hooghly, died this morning at Imambara Sadar Hospital, where she had been admitted yesterday with 90 per cent burns.

Family members said Nilima set herself ablaze after learning she had scored only 11 in Mathematics and failed overall. Her father was a rickshaw-puller.
