Dramatic efforts end in Bagan participation

Calcutta: A hectic effort since the morning on the club’s dissident groups’ part and coach Aloke Mukherjee’s “request” ensured that an apparent players’ revolt should be doused in time, paving the way for Mohun Bagan’s participation in Sunday’s local season’s curtain-raiser.

The dissident groups — Members Forum and Members Guild — called on the players personally and persuaded them to play. It was also a desperate Aloke, making calls to the players, persuading them to climb down from their hardened stand.

“We couldn’t turn down Alokeda’s request,” a senior player later said.

“We, along with representatives of the Members Forum, met the players and said that they should keep faith in the special officers (appointed by the high court),” said the leader of the Members’ Guild. They promised that the players would get their dues before Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the special officers will meet members of the sponsors McDowell India Company Ltd. Monday for the release of the dues.
