A 10-year-old girl was allegedly raped by the priest of a temple when the girl went to offer prayers on Saturday morning.
According to police, the girl, a student of Class IV in a local school, went to the temple in Belghoria, on the city’s northern fringes around 9 am. The priest, Binay Bhattacharjee, 42, asked her to go to his room to take prasad. When she refused, he asked her to carry a box of sweets to his room.
When the girl went in, she was assaulted. She returned home in tears and related the episode to her parents. The girl’s father lodged a complaint with the Belghoria police.
K. Jayraman, additional superintendent of police (Barrackpore), admitted that a case of rape had been lodged at the police station, but refused to give further details. The officer-in-charge of Belghoria police station, however, said the case was a “minor molestation”. The priest has been arrested.
