Caught in the green room

Mumbai, June 13: Green peace activists are known to ambush politicians and barons in unsuspecting venues.

A small, but loud, band of activists, put Hindustan Lever’s thermometer factory at Kodaikanal in the line of fire for allegedly claiming lives and damaging ecology.

They derided the company for exporting health devices to the US and ruining a resort that helps the sick recover.

Banga admitted there were lapses in recovering mercury from a consignment of glass which landed with the scrap dealers, but cited studies that showed there was no damage to the Kodai lake or the river nearby.

“We are not only a generous company but a responsible company also,” he said, swatting suggestions that the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board had asked Lever to close down the thermometer unit.
