Nurse arrest for negligence

Calcutta, June 9: A mob went on the rampage at the ESI Hospital at Kamarhati in North 24-Parganas this afternoon following the death of a youth last night.

The district police arrested two nurses of the hospital after family members lodged a complaint of negligence leading to the death of Kurban Ali, 15, with the Belghoria police station.

Additional superintendent of police (Barrackpore) Jay Raman said Kurban was admitted to the hospital with acute respiratory distress and high fever around 9 pm on Saturday.

“Everybody ignored him and the nurses, in particular, did not take proper care,” alleged Kurban’s father Zamaluddin. After his condition deteriorated yesterday, the family members reported the matter to the hospital authorities, but with little effect.

was done On Sunday, the youth’s condition deteriorated further and family members started panicking. Despite the best efforts made by doctors, Kurban, a local youth finally died at 7.30 pm yesterday.

Early today, local residents ransacked portions of the hospital and also accused the hospital superintendent of negligence. Later in the day they put up a road blockade on Barrackpore Trunk Road holding up traffic.

“We immediately swung into action and persuaded them to lift the blockade. They later came to the police station and filed a complaint against two nursing staff and later arrested them,” Jay Raman added.
