Cold & warm

A grim grip for an adversary and an extra yard for a new ally.

French President Jacques Chirac and President George W. Bush, who did not see eye to eye during the Iraq conflict, shook hands (Reuters close-up shows Bush’s hand on the left and Chirac’s on the right) in their first meeting since the end of the war at the G8 summit.

Their handshake, however, was short and there was none of the hugging and embracing that marked several other arrivals.

But Chirac, whose special invitation brought Vajpayee to the summit, went out of his way to receive the Prime Minister near his car, not at the predetermined place.
