EB advance despite loss

Calcutta, May 24: Lady luck smiled on East Bengal while misfortune struck Tollygunge Agragami as group B action in the under-19 National Football League reached its business end.

East Bengal lost 2-3 to JCT Saturday and yet qualified for the championship round to be held in Goa. Tollygunge Agragami beat Indian Bank won 2-0 despite being reduced to ten men early in the second half, but still failed to make the cut.

Both East Bengal and Tollygunge Agragami finished with four points. East Bengal progressed on the strength of a better goal difference (plus two).

Surinder Singh (2) and Yadavendra Singh scored for JCT, while East Bengal replied though Kingshuk Debnath and Arindam Saha. Tollygunge struck though Mriganka Sharma and Suman Datta.
