Undertrial dies in court lock-up
Jhantu
Sanyal, 30, died in the court lock-up of the sub-divisional
judicial magistrate’s court in Barrackpore, in North 24-Parganas,
on Tuesday. Police said Sanyal had been arrested on Monday
for “creating a ruckus” in the area in an inebriated state.
When he was produced in court, Sanyal fell sick and died shortly
after. The fellow-prisoners in the lock-up complained that
Sanyal had died of “extreme heat”.
A house for the mayor
The city civic authorities have decided to build a mayor’s residence on Belvedere Road, close to the office of borough IX in the city. According to mayor Subrata Mukherjee, Dulal Mukherjee and Associates will be entrusted with the task of designing the building. The construction cost will be around Rs 30 lakh.
Dredging project
The state government will develop a project-manning unit for dredging along the 53-km stretch of canals beside Panchannakhal, Charialkhal and Monikhali, on the city’s fringes, with a Rs 139-crore loan from the Asian Development Bank, state irrigation and waterways minister Amalendralal Roy said on Tuesday. According to the minister, the project will also include improvement of the environment. The work is scheduled for completion by 2007. While nearly 12,000 encroachments along the canal might have to be evicted, the minister did not clearly state the government's stand on them.
Polio conference
Chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, on Tuesday conducted a video conference with district magistrates, from Writers’ Buildings, on the polio immunisation programme in the state. He told them to take all measures for the success of the June 1 programme being held in 16 districts of the state. Union health minister Sushma Swaraj will attend the Calcutta programme.
Industry meet
The core committee on industrial development held its first meeting at the West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation (WBIDC) chambers on Tuesday. The committee was formed earlier this year to provide inputs on the investment scenario in the state. The body, comprising members of the consular corps, met WBIDC chairman Somnath Chatterjee, who invited suggestions from the foreign representatives on increasing the state’s investment potential.
Hospital plot
The Calcutta Municipal Corporation (CMC) has decided to hand over an eight-cottah plot to Islamia Hospital at Park Circus for its nursing training institute. Mayor Subrata Mukherjee said 20 per cent of the proposed 150 seats in the institution will be filled up through the CMC.
Wetland committee
The CMC has constituted an all-party house committee to look after the conservation and preservation of wetlands and water bodies in the city.
