Goon in cop custody

Pinaki Mitra, a criminal arrested from his Green Park residence in Dum Dum on Friday night, has been remanded in police custody for seven days. He was produced in Barrackpore court on Saturday.

Pinaki was wanted on several charges of murder, extortion and other criminal activities, said Ajay Nand, additional superintendent of police, Bidhannagar. According to police, he was also involved in illegal real estate deals.

“Pinaki was behind the filling up of ponds in Pragati Pally near Green Park and construction of buildings on railway land,” a police official said. The goon also ran a country liquor trade and a hotel in Digha.

Factory blaze: A devastating fire broke out in an adhesive factory at Domjur in Howrah around 7 pm on Saturday, police said. Ten fire engines battled the flames that reportedly damaged goods around Rs 1 crore. The cause of the fire could not be ascertained, said fire brigade sources.
