Calcutta: Leander Paes and David Rikl notched up a fine win over Todd Woodbridge and Jonas Bjorkman to enter the semi-finals of the $2.45 million Hamburg Masters Series event Friday.
According to information received here, the sixth-seeded Indo-Czech pair ousted the No. 4 team 7-5, 6-7 (3-7), 6-1 to make its maiden claycourt semi-final. Paes and Rikl had beaten Jared Palmer and Joshua Eagle in straight sets Thursday. In both their previous starts on clay this season — in Monte Carlo and Rome — Paes and Rikl failed to win a match.
Mahesh Bhupathi and Max Mirnyi, who won a close three-setter against Tomas Cibulec and Pavel Vizner, play their quarter final later.
Argentines storm semis
Agencies add: Argentine Gaston Gaudio got the better of Belgian Olivier Rochus 6-1, 6-1 to complete an all-Argentine semi-final line-up in the singles event.
Earlier, Guillermo Coria took 57 minutes to crush Mark Philippoussis 6-2, 6-0, while David Nalbandian overcame Fernando Gonzalez of Chile 5-7, 6-3, 6-4. Agustin Calleri defeated South Africa’s Wayne Ferreira 7-5, 6-2.
Philippoussis made 31 unforced errors against just six from the 12th-seeded Coria.
By contrast, eighth seed Nalbandian took two hours 20 minutes to overcome Gonzalez.
