Pay for pleasure

Berlin, May 16 (Reuters): With the German economy on the brink of recession, cash-strapped cities are slapping a “pleasure tax” on brothels to plug budget holes.

Cologne said today it may broaden its existing pleasure tax to brothels, sex shows and erotic trade fairs. The cities of Gelsenkirchen and Dorsten have already done so, but with only modest success so far.

Cash control

Caracas (Reuters): Venezuela’s tight foreign exchange controls have stopped its candidate from competing in the Miss Universe pageant, her main sponsor said. Private TV channel Venevision said Miss Venezuela, Mariangel Ruiz, would not attend the June 3 contest in Panama as they could not get the hard currency needed to send her.
