Gorkha leader shot

Darjeeling, May 13: Unidentified assailants shot dead senior DGHC councillor Prakash Theeng at Goak, about 48 km from Darjeeling this evening.

Theeng, in his late forties, was returning home from the local market around 5.30 pm when he was attacked. He died on the road to Darjeeling Sadar Hospital.

A senior Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) leader, Theeng is the third councillor to have been murdered since the formation of the DGHC in 1988.

Rudra Pradhan, a Darjeeling branch committee member of the GNLF, was hacked to death at the Darjeeling motor stand on March 28, 1999. C.K. Pradhan, the rebel GNLF leader, also a councillor, was gunned down in broad daylight in Kalimpong on October 3 last year.
