Pune: Orissa won the 34th junior national women’s hockey meet, defeating Jharkhand 4-3 in a penalty shootout on Sunday.
Orissa took the lead in the 53rd through L. Basanti. Jharkhand, however, scored the equaliser ten minutes later through Amrita Minz.
In the penalty shootout, Binita, Sumitra and Basanti scored for Orissa, while B. Seting and captain Susheela coverted their strokes for Jharkhand. Orissa finally won when goalkeeper Pushpanjali came up with a brilliant effort to stop K. Nilima’s shot.
Asuntal Lakra of Jharkhand bagged the best player award, while Manjiri of Uttar Pradesh was named the best defender. The best forward was Poonam Singh, also of Uttar Pradesh. Guddikumari and Amruta Minz of Jharkhand were the joint highest scorers. (PTI)
