CPM-Cong clash after murder

Behrampore, May 5: A CPM worker was killed in the Domkol police station area and five Congress supporters were seriously injured in a clash with CPM cadre in Ranitala last night as the spiral of violence in the run-up to the rural poll continued to go up.

“Police recovered the body of Ghulam Mondol, 48, from Sadyar village. It had multiple wounds. His son alleged in an FIR that a group of Congress supporters had called him out of his house last night and killed him later,” said Murshidabad superintendent of police Virendra.

At Dihipara in the Ranitala police station area, Congress supporters and a CPM campaign group fought with each other. Both groups opened fire, said the police.

“Four Congress supporters and one from the CPM have been sent to hospital with bullet wounds, 10 people belonging to both parties have been arrested,” Virendra said.

The district Congress claimed the Ranitala incident took place even as Behrampore municipality chairman Biswajit Dhar was campaigning there. He escaped unhurt. The CPM accused the Congress for Mondol’s murder.
