Kidnap kingpin in the net

Calcutta, May 5: Jhalda police with help from officers in Jharkhand and the CID netted the kingpin of a kidnap gang from a hideout in Dhanbad last night.

Gopal Prasad Gupta, an “associate” of a senior minister in the Babulal Marandi government, was the alleged mastermind of the abduction of Purulia businessman Naresh Agarwal.

Following up on leads picked up during the investigation to the Agarwal kidnap case, a police team stormed the house in a Dhanbad suburb and caught Gupta by surprise.

Naresh, the owner of a downstream petro-chem unit, was abducted on April 4 on way to his Durgapur factory from his Jhalda residence. Investigations revealed he was taken to a village near Dhanbad and kept there till his brothers paid up the ransom.
