Barber killed over tip share

An altercation over the sharing of tips led to the murder of a barber in a saloon on Jhowtala Road, in the Beniapukur police station area, on Saturday morning.

Police said Md. Raju, a 28-year-old barber, slit the neck of his colleague Md. Asgar, 22, with a razor after a heated argument over the sharing of a Rs 20 tip one of them had received the day before. The shop-owner’s son found Asgar lying on the floor around 8.30 am. He was rushed to National Medical College and Hospital where doctors pronounced him “brought dead”.

Raju has been absconding since then. “We are conducting raids to net him,” said Sanjay Mukherjee, deputy commissioner, eastern suburban division. “Asgar and Raju have been working in the shop for the past two years. The two would often fight over tips from customers,” said deputy commissioner, headquarters, K.L. Tamta.

Two drowned

Two men drowned in the Hooghly on Friday night during an immersion ceremony at Gwalior Ghat. Police said Rana Pratap Roy and his friend Buno Mitra slipped into the water while taking a bath. A man jumped into the water to rescue the two but was himself getting swept away by the current. Minister for Sunderbans development Kanti Ganguly’s son Shamya then dived into the river and dragged him to the shore.
