Taxi trapped between trucks
A taxi was trapped between two trailer trucks late on Sunday, injuring passengers Rahina Begum, 16, and her uncle, Hakim Mohit Khan, 45, on Circular Garden Reach Road. The duo was taken to the nearest hospital and admitted for treatment. The driver of the taxi was not injured. The trucks simply sped away.
Torture blame in teen death
Mystery shrouds the death of 15-year-old Khairunnissa at her uncle’s house on Jhowtala Road, in the Karaya police station area, on Sunday. Police said her neighbours claimed that the uncle, Mohammad Salauddin, had tortured her to death. Karaya police have registered a case and sent the body for post-mortem.
Protest rallies
Several state government employees’ unions will hold protest rallies in front of district magistrates’ offices across the state on Monday to protest the police atrocities on them at Writers' Buildings on April 24. Joint Struggle Forum spokesperson P.B. Nag said several employees were injured by the police during a protest meet at Writers’.
Thrift pledge
Large sections of the Marwari community met at Shree Agrasen Smriti Bhawan Sabhagar, in Burrabazar, on Sunday evening, “in an effort to uproot the menace of dowry” and “phase out unproductive and wasteful expenses at weddings and other social functions”. A resolution to boycott, among other things, “marriage receptions with more than 21 food items” was passed at the seminar.
Slum blaze
Fire broke out in a slum at Beniapukur on Sunday morning but residents spotted it early and put it out. Fire brigade officials said four fire tenders had been sent to the spot.
