Three held under arms racket cloud

Purulia, April 26: A Criminal Investigation Department (CID) team from Calcutta, in collaboration with the district police, busted a suspected inter-state arms racket when it arrested three persons from Purulia town and neighbouring Jharkhand’s Bokaro and seized three firearms, several rounds of ammunition and explosives.

Acting on a tip-off, the team, led by deputy superintendent of police D.N. Goswami, arrived here yesterday and began the raids which continued well into the night. “They apprehended two persons, Nemai Mahato of Purulia and Rameshwar Prasad of Sakchi in Jamshedpur,” said district superintendent of police V.K. Goyal.

Mahato is the Purulia town secretary of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM).

A revolver, a double-barrelled pipegun, 12 live cartridges and bomb-making material were found in three bags in their possession. The third person, Shahnawaz Ansari, was held in Bokaro late last evening. A pipegun, bullets and crude bombs were seized from him as well.
