Sonali stable after suicide bid

Calcutta, April 25: The condition of Trinamul Congress MLA from Satgachhia, Sonali Guha, who attempted suicide and was admitted to a city nursing home yesterday afternoon, was said to be stable today.

Stung by “humiliation” after husband Partha Basu was denied the post of chairman in Wednesday’s election to Borough 5 of the Calcutta Municipal Corporation, Sonali, a close aide of party chief Mamata Banerjee, had consumed about 30 sleeping pills. Family members rushed her to a nursing home.

“Though doctors said they would be able to comment on her condition after 72 hours, she has regained consciousness and is improving fast,” said Basu.

He added that chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee had called up Sonali and wished her speedy recovery. Speaker of the Assembly Hashim Abdul Halim sent a bouquet. “An anxious Mamata called up the nursing home several times to enquire about Sonali’s condition,” Basu said.

Youth killed

Trinamul worker Shyamal Purkait, 26, was beaten to death today at Mathurapur in South 24-Parganas by alleged Congress workers. However, police said he was killed over a land dispute and there was no politics in it.
