Youth held for carjack

Burdwan, April 20: The district police arrested a youth from Kanaidanga in Memari last night on charges of hijacking an Ambassador in Calcutta.

Police superintendent B.N. Ramesh said they are looking for two others. Three youths from Kudmanga and Jamua villages of Giridih district in Jharkhand had stolen the car from a red-light area in central Calcutta.

Posing as passengers, the youths asked the driver of the car, parked in the red-light area yesterday evening, to take them to Dankuni. When they reached there, driver Virendra Rai was thrashed. As he lay unconscious in the car, they drove to Memari. At the toll collection centre on Durgapur Express Way, some people heard a groaning sound from inside the car and raised alarm.

The youths fled, leaving the car behind. The police searched the nearby villages and picked up Sheikh Alauddin (24).
