Titanic tables

Oversized banquet tables from the sinking Titanic could have been used as floating rafts, saving hundreds of lives, if the crew of the doomed ship had appreciated the danger they were in, Titanic director James Cameron says.

“One of the tragedies of the Titanic is that there were dozens of enormous but still easily moved wooden tables which could have been transformed into makeshift lifeboats,” Cameron told Webster Hall’s Baird Jones at the premiere of Ghosts of the Abyss, his IMAX film about the descent to the ship’s hull. The ship sank 91 years ago this week.

“There was such limited communication that the use of the banquet tables was not called upon until it was too late.”
