60-year-old killed under van wheels

A 60-year-old man was killed when a Maruti van knocked him down on Deshapran Sashmal Road, in the Charu Market police station area, on Sunday morning. Police said the incident occurred while victim Arun Banerjee was crossing the road. The driver fled with the vehicle.

Court staff found hanging

A Group-D employee of the city civil court, Chandra Narayan Singh, was found hanging in a bathroom in the court compound on Sunday morning. Police said he had been suffering from depression.

Goon held

Goutam Pal, a goon with several criminal charges, including extortion, against him, was arrested from the Lake Town area on Sunday afternoon, police said.

Heroin haul

Calcutta Police, in a joint raid with its counterpart in South 24-Parganas, rounded up Sheikh Salim from Behala on Saturday night and seized 100 g of heroin from him. Salim, wanted in several cases of murder and extortion, had been absconding for years. The police raid comes in the wake of a Trinamul Congress complaint that Salim was terrorising its candidates in different areas of South 24-Parganas. In another incident, police arrested Ganesh Dutta, a criminal, from the Thakurpukur area.

Writers’ protest

Members of the Joint Struggle Forum, an umbrella organisation of seven state government employees’ unions, have decided to take mass casual leave on April 24 at Writers’ Buildings to protest the government’s decision to reduce various benefits to them. The demands also include immediate payment of 14 per cent dearness allowance, said Forum spokesperson P.B. Nag.
