India lose to Turkmenistan

New Delhi: India went down to Turkmenistan 0-2 in a first leg first round match of the Asian qualifiers for the 2004 Athens Olympics at Ashkhabad in Turkmenistan.

Saturday’s loss jolted India’s quest to progress to the second round to play Malaysia. The Indian under-23 team now faces a tough task to get past Turkmenistan when the two teams fight in the second leg in Goa April 19.

In a keenly contested match which remained goalless till the last quarter, Azad Mohadov put the hosts ahead in the 75th minute. The second goal came off a penalty kick converted by Karimov in injury time, according to information received here.
