Suicide case started against school

The police have initiated a case against the authorities of a well-known, English-medium missionary school in Howrah after a teacher committed suicide on Saturday. The teacher, Chitra Ghosh, 57, a resident of Salt Lake’s HB block, consumed poison to end her life. In her suicide note, Chitra had blamed the mental torture by the school authorities for her death. Chitra, who lived with her husband and daughter, would often complain to her family about her “mental agony”.

Two top cop offices shifted

The offices of two additional superintendents of police (rural and industrial) in South 24-Parganas were shifted to Behala and Baruipur, respectively, on Sunday. According to superintendent of police D.K. Ganguly, the new offices will help policemen attend to the complaints of local residents more effectively.

Knocked down

Forty-year-old Munshi Rama was knocked down by a taxi in Lover’s Lane, in the Hastings police station area, on Sunday. He has been admitted to SSKM Hospital. The driver was arrested and the vehicle impounded.

Sonali Guha ill

Sonali Guha, Trinamul Congress MLA from Satgachhia, was admitted to a city nursing home after being taken ill on Sunday. Guha had been on a hungerstrike at Noidakhali, near Budge Budge, demanding renovation of an embankment. Doctors said later in the evening that her condition is stable.

Child hit by truck

A five-year-old child was killed in a road accident at Natunhat, bordering Rajarhat and Bhangar police stations, on the northern fringes of the city, on Sunday. The unidentified child was hit by a loaded truck and died on the spot, police said in the evening.
