Congress in Kerala crisis

Thiruvananthapuram, April 3: The Congress in Kerala plunged into turmoil tonight with veteran leader K. Karunakaran fielding a rebel candidate for a Rajya Sabha seat and his son K. Muraleedharan reportedly resigning as state unit chief.

The father and son have been at loggerheads for some time but party chief Sonia Gandhi’s refusal to endorse either of their nominees has now pitted both against the high command.

The Congress is the major partner in Kerala’s ruling coalition, headed by chief minister A.K. Antony who led the combine to a landslide victory in the last Assembly polls.
